RAF Diversity/STEM Engagement Event

On Tuesday 15th March 2022 Bishop Stopford’s School was delighted to have hosted a special RAF Diversity/STEM Engagement Event at the school.

Selected members of the RAF BAME Network landed a Chinook Helicopter on our school field and then conducted a series of presentations and workshops to our students with a STEM focus, plus the aircrew gave tours of the aircraft to students.

The whole school was on the field to witness the landing and we were joined by neighbouring Suffolks Primary School who were also able to experience yours of the helicopter and meet and talk to the crew during the day.  Freezywater St. Georges C of E Primary School joined us later on for tours and talks as well.

The focus was on diversity and aspiration and the RAF members represented a range of professions (e.g. Doctors, Nurses, Engineers, Pilots, Air Traffic Controllers and Admin Officers).  They were able to talk about their roles, their journeys to becoming professionals and gave our students a lot to aspire to.  It was an amazing event that captivated students and staff alike and was an absolute pleasure and privilege to be involved in.

This was a pilot (if you forgive the pun) so we were also proud to be the first school to receive this initiative!!!
