The aims of the Modern Languages Department are to:

  1. Develop the ability to use language effectively for purposes of practical communication especially through trips abroad.
  2. Develop pupils’ understanding of themselves and their own culture and offer insights into the culture and civilisation of other countries.
  3. Promote independence in language learning and use, e.g. independent reading.
  4. Provide courses which ensure that every student has the opportunity to reach his/her full potential in languages.
  5. Prepare students for the working world.

The Languages Department offers a wide range of opportunities for pupils from Year 7 right up to the Sixth Form to develop their language skills and learn at first hand about life in the country whose language(s) they are learning. We have native speakers of French and German in the department who pupils have the opportunity to work with.   All pupils in Years 7 -11 now work regularly with the computers on a variety of tasks in the 2 languages that we offer.  Since the school is a specialist school in ICT we make frequent use of ICT, particularly the Internet, to develop pupils’ linguistic skills and knowledge of the country whose language they are studying.  All the language rooms are equipped with Interactive Whiteboards.  We also have a Foreign Language Assistant for French and Spanish, allowing classes from Year 7 up to sixth form to benefit from extra oral practice individually, in pairs or small groups with a native speaker.

Key Stage 3

In year 7, pupils will either study French or German, depending on which form class they are placed in and they will continue with this language throughout years 8 and 9.

Key Stage 4

We highly recommend pupils continue to study a language at GCSE level.  Most opt to continue with the language they studied at KS3 but there is the possibility in year 10 of starting Spanish afresh or, where staff believe a pupil’s capabilities would allow them to achieve well, studying French or German from scratch.
